Nancy Mudenyo Hunt and I talked  to the Friends of Watlington Library last night about the novel we unusually wrote together Not so Black and White .

I described how we found a way into our story of Precious Mukosi.  It was the secret Nancy told me when I interviewed her for the Oxford Castaways series. I began with a prosaic question.

‘Where were you born and when were you born?’

She answered,

‘I was born in Musanda in western Kenya but when was I born?  I have no idea.’

She explained that her father, a tribal chief, was disappointed when her mother gave birth to another girl and refused to register her birth or give her a name.

Given that start, it’s amazing that Nancy went on to be given the NatWest award for Most Inspirational Woman in 2014.
